Titanic

Cassandra Moe

This piece is a routine choreographed by Bailey Sok– who is Korean American– to the song Titanic by Chinese artist Jackson Wang and featuring Indonesian rapper Rich Brian. On a surface level, this is a clear testament to modern Asian art; Titanic has over 19 million views on YouTube and over 20 million streams on Spotify, while the dance video has over 2 million views. But beyond that, Bailey’s choreography consists of a lot of sharp movement, heavy textures and confident persona; these contrast with the stereotypical expectations of women, and especially Asian women, to be docile and demure, and empower the performer to be bold.

Tea for Two is a song dedicated to our grandparents. We wanted to express our appreciation for these founding figures in our lives, while also attempting to confide in them as we grow into adults in the midst of the familial and societal pressures that Asian Americans face. This song is also about our experiences in learning what it means to be an Asian American, and all that our identity entails.

Cold

"Cold" describes my over-arching experience being a transgender Korean American as well as the effects of mental illness. I talk about the white cis-het and/or male gaze; the gaze that damages so many people today and burns an inner anger in them. I hoped to express this anger but also the grief and sadness that comes about this through words, sound, and movement.

Mt. Mayon

Gabriel Carrascoso

The rap performed is a loose retelling of an old Filipino folktale that describes the formation of Mayon, an active volcano in the province of Albay in the Bicol region of the Philippines. Legend has it that the mountain had formed from the resting place of Magayon and Panganoron, two star-crossed lovers who had died in the heat of battle. It said that when the clouds touch the peak of Mayon, it symbolizes Panganoron embracing the beautiful princess Magayon helping prevent the volcano from erupting. The rap is performed from the perspective of Panganoron, who recounts the events leading up to his and Magayon’s untimely demise at the hands of the jealous suitor Pagtuga. My intention with this project was to bring light to a part of Filipino culture and geography displayed through a more modern art form and interpretation.
